Review
What an episode. I definitely wasn't too impressed, but it was a decent ending overall. The one thing that really bugged me was the ending. Why is Mirai alive?
Everything that happened - Mirai slowly disappearing before Akihito pulled another Angel Beats, all the words and feelings Mirai and Akihito exchanged this episode, all the buildup that KyoAni presented us - was all kicked into the dust when Mirai suddenly appeared on that roof. It basically made her "sacrifice" somewhat meaningless. And that doesn't even involve the big question of how is she still alive. It bugs me how for once, if they left one of (if not the most) dead, it wouldn't have made me rage at all. Everything was setup perfectly so that she could be left dead, which is what I thought was going to happen. Instead, she magically appears on the roof without her megane only to be given them by the megane freak.
One of the more interesting things that happened this episode was the fight between Muroko and Izumi, and the revelation they she too harbors a dreamshade inside herself. Is that another reason why her attitude is that way it is? She mentions not throwing away her pride as a human... but again this only raises more questions. How and why does she have a dreamshade herself? Not to mention that after this whole situation, she loses being the head of the Nase clan to the young Hiromi.
My favorite part of this episode would probably be when Mirai realized she was "dying" or disappearing and she asked Akihito to pet her head and say thank you. Very touching and well executed. I also laughed when Sakura kicked Akihito's mother xD
Overall as a show, Kyoukai no Kanata started out great. It had its great moments, but as it went on, the feeling of excitement from the first episode slowly declined...and declined...and declined. There just wasn't that umph to sustain the interesting premise.
The animation was of course, top notch. All the fighting scenes were wonderfully animated with fluid transitions and lots of pretty lights lol. Sometimes, it did get a little all over the place, but kudos to KyoAni for pulling off wonderful fighting sequences. I'm still waiting for that final fight between Muroko and Izumi!!!
The plot itself was good. Not great, but good. Akihito as the MC didn't feel much like an MC. He was kind of just there whenever things happened. He housed no special qualities (aside from the Kyoukai no Kanata residing inside him) and other that him being immortal, he was an ordinary guy. KyoAni did pull off the moe perfectly (which is their fortè). Mirai, Mistuki, and Ai were all adorable. Especially in idol mode hehe.
Music was really nice as well. I totally loved the ED "Daisy". One of my favorites, if not my favorite, of this season. The OSTs and Inserts used were beautiful as well.
Visuals: 9/10
Audio: 9/10
Story: 7/10
Characters: 8/10
Enjoyment: 8/10
Overall: 8.2/10
Fun ride, but no rollercoaster. A nice open ending leaving room for a 2nd season, and the sales are doing well too. With tons of questions leftover, like who is Akihito's mother, we can only hope they'll be answered in another season or the 13th episode. I wonder if the Light Novels explained more.
Thanks again guys for sticking with me through the 12 weeks of Kyoukai no Kanata. With the 13th episode coming with the BDs, I hope they explain some things. I'm worried it's just going to be one of those "beach" episodes or something.

I agree with you man, as much as I did like Mirai (although Mistuki was the best, hands down) it would've been better had she died and stayed dead. Seems like no one stays dead these days... always gotta come back to life. I remember the days when people died when they were killed... them good old days.
ReplyDeleteTo me ep 12 felt like another ep except with a slightly grander scale. Akihito's mom is still running wild, I'm pissed her character was never explained, but all in all it kinda is set up for a sequel. The music and visuals were nice though, I liked that part. I gave it an 8/10 on MAL. It started out good but it lacked something to make it amazing to the end.
Yeah. It's all about that "happy ending" which isn't too bad, but in this case it would definitely have been better and added to the emotional aspect.
DeleteA lot of questions were leftover, and knowing KyoAni, a 2nd season isn't that far of a stretch. It's just a matter of time before they announce it already haha. Overall, KnK did lack that "umph" to really make it a memorable ending.
